Cooking role play

Cooking with kids is a great, fun way to learn skills they will need later on in their lives. But playing with them in "their" little kitchen, the possibilities are endless! Prepare a picnic for their favorite stuffies or a special meal for daddy, or a nice treat for their grandparents. Go grocery shopping with them or play restaurant. Food toys are also good for counting and you can cut out pictures of food from a magazine, glue them on card stock paper and ask your kid to match the food toy with its picture.

Setting up an activity center in your house

Setting up an activity center worked really well for us. When you leave your educational puzzles, plastic letters and numbers and playdough out on a shelf or a table for your kids to see they seem more likely to say "Hey! Why not play with this?"

Home made puzzles

Puzzles are a great fun learning tool but can be very expensive. So why not make your own? Use old magazines, newspapers or print them or draw, color  and decorate them yourself with your kids!
You can then ask your child to match the letters or numbers with plastic letters and numbers to put on top.
With home made puzzles you an work on number, letter and color recognition and your child will see it as a game.

Matching numbers

In this case I wanted to work on numbers from 10 to 100, so I prepared them on big pieces of cardboard and also on smaller cards, asked my little ones to match the little cards with the big ones.
Other options:
- Call out a number and ask the kid to jump on the matching one on the floor;
- Say a number and ask them to find it and mark it with a pom pom or put a figurine or dice or cheerios on it.
